Gamer Girl taps into the culture of gaming, uniting books and the online world in a fun-tastic novel. After her parents' divorce, a move away from her friends in Boston, and a horrific first day at her new school, Maddy seeks refuge in her manga and the game world of Fields of Fantasy, where she can be powerful, beautiful, and beat back the bullies with her spells. But the game world and her real life start to intersect when she meets Sir Leo, another character in the game who turns out to go to her school. Who is he? Will he still like her when he realizes that she's just plain, unpopular Maddy? Mancusi handles the ups and downs of high school, family, and virtual reality with zest, producing a novel that will fit right in on a 16-year-old's desk, between InuYasha and World of Warcraft.--Jenn Northington, The King's English Bookshop (Salt Lake City, UT)

I laughed out loud as I read Sophie's misadventures with the 3 assorted horses her mother accumulated for the enjoyment and edification of her daughters. The book is written for middle readers, but is equally good as an enjoyable adult story to be appreciated by horse lovers, and haters. It reads like a biography of a 12 year girl learning to overcome her literal downfalls and juggling her upper learning curve with horses, and friends. Lots of fun.--Jennifer Hall, Partners Village Store (Westport, MA)

The well-ordered, rigid home of foundling, Medford Runyuin is an island called 'Island' because names should identify and usefulness is imperative. Feeling like an outcast, he struggles to conform until two very unconventional 'stinky' new friends enter his world and send everything awhirl. This is a marvelous tribute to change and creativity!--Kathy Carrigan, Harry W. Schwartz Bookshop (Brookfield, WI)

Have you ever felt that your head would explode while thinking too hard about outer space? Read this book! But beyond being totally astronomical, it is also the very down-to-earth story of three kids, each at a pivotal moment in their lives, who find themselves together, in the middle of nowhere, to see a once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse. And only as they are forced together, and begin to contemplate the vastness of space, do they realize the significant role each of them has to play in the universe.--Katie Capaldi, McLean & Eakin Booksellers (Petoskey, MI)
