Love, Stargirl
by
Spinelli, Jerry
LOVE, STARGIRL picks up a year after STARGIRL ends and reveals the new life of the beloved character who moved away so suddenly at the end of STARGIRL. The novel takes the form of the world's longest letter, in diary form, going from date to date through a little more than a year's time. In her writing, Stargirl mixes memories of her bittersweet time in Mica, Arizona, with involvements with new people in her life.In LOVE, STARGIRL, we hear the voice of Stargirl herself as she reflects on time, life, Leo, and - of course - love. |

When: Thursday, May 29, 2008 7:00 PM Location: First Congo Nursery School, 1985 Louis Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303 Description: The First Congo Nursery School & The Play Store Invite You to Spend an Evening With Award-winning Author Dr. Susan Linn. The Case for Make Believe: Saving Play in a Commercialized World
In the critically acclaimed Consuming Kids (The New Press, 2004), Susan Linn, the nation's leading advocate for protecting children from corporate marketers, provided an unsparing look at modern childhood molded by commercialism. In her new book, THE CASE FOR MAKE BELIEVE, Dr. Linn argues that while play is crucial to human development and children are born with an innate capacity for make believe, the convergence of ubiquitous technology and unfettered commercialism actually prevents them from playing. In modern day America, nurturing creative play is not only counter-cultural — it threatens corporate profits. Susan Linn, Ed.D. is the Associate Director of the Media Center at Judge Baker Children's Center and Instructor in Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and the Director of The Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood, which she co-founded. Her work has been seen on Mister Roger’s Neighborhood, The Today Show, and Good Morning America. In 2006, she received the American Psychological Association's Presidential Citation for her work on behalf of children. Dr. Linn lives in Boston, MA.

Endymion Spring
by
Skelton, Matthew
Endymion Spring by Mathew Skelton is a story about magic and intrigue. The book parallels the lives of two boys, one living in Germany in 1452 and the other in present day England. Endymion Spring is a mute apprentice to Johann Gutenberg, inventor of the printing press in 15th century Germany. Endymion is introduced to the evil Johann Fust who has a mysterious book that only Endymion can see the words. Centuries later, a young American named Blake is temporarily living at Oxford with his mother and sister. Bored, he spends time in the library and discovers Endymion's book. Like Endymion, only Blake can see words on the pages. Both boys are pursued by Evil and take great risks to protect their book. The best scene takes place in the underground library where books are literally flying off the shelf which is reminiscent of Harry Potter. Like Harry Potter, Good eventually triumphs over Evil. However, Blake is not Harry Potter and the author raises questions that are not answered such as why were only Endymion and Blake able to see the words in the book? The book is written for 11 to 13 year olds who may be overwhelmed by the vocabulary. After a very slow start, the book improves and by the last hundred pages is hard to put down so the sequel (if written) should be great! Reviewed by Ross Bilger, Los Altos. |

Hattie Big Sky
by
Larson, Kirby
"Piecing together remnants of her own ancestor's life, Kirby Larson has fashioned a warm, colorful quilt of a novel. Sixteen-year-old Hattie, an orphaned city girl who's been trundled from one relative to another, strikes out on her own to homestead a claim in Montana during WWI, with only her strong faith and the kindness of her German neighbors to sustain her. A lovely story." --Joanne Fritz, Chester County Book &Music Company, West Chester, PA |
